The governor of Hesekê, Nûredîn Îsa Ehmed, received a delegation from the Syrian Ministry of Energy and Water Resources. The delegation was led by ministry representative Khaled Al-Ghazi. The meeting was also attended by the co-chairs of the Autonomous Administration’s Executive Council as well as several advisers.
The discussions centered on issues of integration and possible cooperation mechanisms between institutions in the energy and water sectors. Delegation members particularly emphasized the importance of restarting the Alouk water station. For this, the establishment of a technical team with the participation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was considered necessary.
Another point of discussion was the planned modernization of the electricity plant in Dirbêsiyê. Governor Ehmed stated that they were ready to establish the necessary committees to continuously monitor the situation of water resources. At the same time, he signaled support for measures aimed at restarting the Alouk station.
Ehmed also stressed that the work of the joint committees formed during previous meetings must be regularly followed up. Such continuous cooperation, he said, is crucial for further strengthening collaboration between both sides.
Key water station located in occupation zone
The Alouk water station is located in Serêkaniyê (Ras al-Ain), which has been under Turkish occupation since 2019, and has for years been a central point of conflict over water supply in northeastern Syria. Militias loyal to Ankara have prevented the resumption of pumping operations for years, despite agreements on restarting the facility. Around 1.5 million people in Hesekê and its surroundings suffer from the water crisis. Many families are forced to buy expensive water from tanker trucks or rely on shallow wells, which often do not meet hygienic standards.
