Border crossing closed to traffic as heavy rainfall submerges the Sêmalka bridge

The bridge at the Sêmalka Border Crossing, which connects Rojava Kurdistan (in Syria) and Bashur Kurdistan (in Iraq), has become unusable due to the sudden rise in the water level of the Tigris River. Authorities announced that the bridge will remain completely closed to traffic until the end of Eid al-Fitr this weekend.

Heavy rainfall in the region caused the flow of the Tigris River to increase significantly. As the river’s water level reached critical thresholds, the bridge over the river was partially submerged. Inspections carried out immediately after the incident revealed serious structural damage to the bridge.

Following the flooding, significant damage occurred on the bridge, and teams are working intensively to restore it to safe use as soon as possible.

Authorities stated that repair work on the bridge is ongoing and that the crossing will remain closed until Eid al-Fitr.
