This year, Newroz (Kurdish New Year) will be celebrated in many cities with mass participation under the slogan “Newroz of Freedom and Democracy.” Preparations for the celebrations are ongoing, with strong participation expected in the squares where demands for the lifting of the isolation imposed on Abdullah Öcalan, as well as calls for peace and a democratic solution, will come to the forefront.
Mehmet Kamaç, Co-Spokesperson of the Democratic Unity Initiative, said that Newroz will take place in the shadow of developments unfolding across the Middle East, noting that the reality of Kurdistan lies at the center of many of the conflicts in the region. Kamaç stated that for this reason, Newroz should be marked by Kurds as a “Newroz of freedom, democracy and national unity.”
Resistance in Rojava showed the spirit of national unity
Kamaç said that the attacks on Rojava have created a strong sense of solidarity and unity among the Kurdish people. He noted that Kurds across the four parts of Kurdistan and in the diaspora have displayed a common stance during this period. According to Kamaç, this spirit of unity has played an important role in thwarting certain international plans.
Kamaç said, “If the Kurdish people had not acted with this spirit of unity, the plans aimed at eliminating, denying and stripping the Kurds of their political will could have succeeded. However, the Kurds resisted with a spirit of unity and foiled these plans. In this sense, we believe that Newroz 2026 will be a Newroz of freedom and national unity for the Kurdish people.”
Kamaç said the Kurdish people will fill the Newroz squares with strong participation and noted that Newroz 2026 could become an important turning point on the path toward freedom and peace.
Kamaç also stated that Newroz is not merely a celebration for the Kurdish people but a symbol of resistance against oppression and the struggle for freedom. He added that national unity has now become a historical necessity for the Kurds.
Newroz is the strongest ground for national unity
Mehmet Kamaç said that Newroz constitutes an important ground for strengthening Kurdish national unity, stressing that Newroz is both a national and a freedom celebration for the Kurdish people. Kamaç stated that national unity and Newroz cannot be considered separately, adding that the Kurdish struggle for freedom, the search for national unity and demands for political status are deeply interconnected. He said that celebrating Newroz with the spirit of national unity carries great significance.
