TEV-ÇAND pays tribute to Kurdish poet Ehmed Huseynî

Kurdish poet Ehmed Huseynî, who had been receiving treatment for cancer for some time, died in Switzerland where he was being treated.

Huseynî was born in Amûdê in 1955 and completed his primary education there. He later went to Damascus for university and studied philosophy. However, the regime in Syria did not allow him to use his diploma.

Ehmed Huseynî was forced to migrate to Switzerland in 1989. Throughout his life he worked in the fields of poetry and literature and also hosted programs on ROJ TV.

The European Culture and Arts Movement (TEV-ÇAND) paid tribute to poet Ehmed Huseynî in a written statement.

TEV-ÇAND wrote:  “With great sorrow we received the news of the death of our great intellectual and poet, Ehmed Huseynî. Known as one of the pioneers of modern free Kurdish poetry, Huseynî played the role of a bridge between the new and the older generation. With his unique style, he did not only create sentences but almost created words themselves. For this reason, he was also known as the ‘sheikh of words.’ He presented emotions and words to readers with philosophical depth.

With the success of the Rojava Revolution, he returned to Rojava, realizing his dream and belief, saying ‘Loving the land is fulfilled in its embrace.’ Alongside many literary works and patriotic cultural activities, he became one of the pioneers and founders of the Union of Intellectuals of Rojava Kurdistan (Hevgirtina Rewşenbîrên Rojavayê Kurdistanê). With his return to Rojava, he also paved the way for the union to move its center back to Rojava.”

TEV-ÇAND added: “Ehmed Huseynî loved the soil of his country more than words. For this reason, he decided to return to Rojava. Thanks to his modest personality, warm friendship, and mature intellectual identity, he could build friendships with every generation and find a place in everyone’s heart. For the last two years, he had been struggling with an illness, but this was as long as his strength allowed him to resist.

As the Democratic Culture and Arts Movement, we feel indebted in the face of Ehmed Huseynî’s love for his country and freedom. He was a companion in art and culture. He was a supporter of struggle and resistance. He was devoted to his country. Our condolences to our people and to those who loved him.”
