First convoy of Afrin residents reaches home

Within the framework of implementing the January 29 agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian interim government, the first convoy of Afrin residents living in the Jazira region set out toward their homeland yesterday.

The first convoy, consisting of 400 Afrin families, departed yesterday in the presence of the Internal Security Forces, with the participation of Hasakah Internal Security Forces Deputy Commander Mahmoud Khalil, Asayish commander Nesrin Abdullah, and government officials responsible for this matter.

The migrant convoy consisted of hundreds of vehicles and private buses belonging to the Afrin–Shehba Displaced Persons Council and the Syrian Civil Defense. The convoy passed through the cities of Raqqa, Tabqa, and Aleppo and reached Afrin early this morning.

After 8 years of forced displacement, the returning convoy was welcomed en masse by the people of Afrin with songs, drums, and ululations.

In a statement on March 7, the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) had announced that the first convoy of displaced Afrin residents—originally from the districts of Shiye, Jindires, and Mabata—would depart from Jazira for Afrin on March 9.

Speaking to the press while accompanying the convoy, Mahmoud Khalil said that work had been carried out over the past three days to open a safe corridor toward Afrin, and that efforts are ongoing to ensure the return of all displaced people before Newroz.
