Birtane: Kurdish women want to lead the unity congress

The Kurdish Women’s Unity Platform will hold a national unity meeting in Amed (tr: Diyarbakır) on March 2. The meeting will address recent developments in both Kurdistan and the Middle East. Women will also discuss the planned National Congress, for which preparatory work is ongoing.

Evaluating the upcoming meeting, Kurdish Women’s Unity Platform member and politician Mülkiye Birtane stated that national unity is the greatest need of the Kurdish people and must be built without fail.

Kurdish people are being excluded from the plans

Mülkiye Birtane said that efforts are being made to keep the Kurdish people outside the process as the Middle East is being reshaped.

The politician continued: “We are currently going through a very serious process. We often speak about the gravity of historical moments, but right now the Middle East is being redesigned. Once again, they want to exclude the Kurdish people from this process and from these redesign plans. For this reason, the Kurdish people are standing up in all four parts for their freedom and unity. The situation in Syria today concerns not only the Syrian government, but the entire Middle East and the world. The Kurdish people, particularly in Rojava, have been among those who have faced the greatest hardship and oppression, and major wars have taken place. Today, the Kurdish people continue to pursue their demand for freedom.”

The people have united around the spirit of unity

Remarking that a system of life has been built in Rojava over the past 14 years, Birtane noted that these achievements are now being targeted: “The diplomacy carried out is also meant to be shaped around the Kurdish people. We clearly see this policy both politically and on the ground. Today, although Kurds are geographically divided into four parts, they have internally eliminated this fragmentation in terms of borders and seek to achieve their collective demands. Many efforts and conferences have been organized so far to ensure Kurdish unity. However, the most recently planned unity congress did not achieve its objective.”

Women want to take the lead in unity

Mülkiye Birtane stated that women want to assume a leading role in the unity process, noting that Kurdish women in Rojava, Europe, Rojhilat, Bashur, and Bakur are working to realize the unity congress. She said, “In Bakur, women organized two conferences in 2010 and 2019. Last year, women parliamentarians also held a conference for unity. Women want to be pioneers at the point of unity. With the meeting we are organizing, we aim to bring Kurdish women together and take the lead in the upcoming national congress.”

There is an attack on women’s struggle for a free life

Stating that attacks against women have increased, Birtane said this is a policy directed against women’s struggle for freedom. “Today, serious femicides are taking place all over the world and in Kurdistan. In Iran and in Rojava, women’s lives are being disregarded, and women’s very existence is being targeted for erasure. Women continue their self-defense against these massacres and persist in their struggle. Women’s bodies are being exposed, women are being taken captive, and subjected to torture in the streets. All of this is carried out in response to women’s struggle for a free life,” she said.

Mülkiye Birtane concluded: “If the path of women’s struggle is blocked, then nation-states will implement whatever policies they wish. That is why such an intense attack is being carried out against women.”
