Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş met with representatives of civil society organizations at an iftar program held in Istanbul and made remarks on the current agenda.
Referring to the Parliamentary Commission established for resolving the Kurdish question, Kurtulmuş said, “Nearly all political parties supported the continuation of the process. The commission held its first meeting on August 5 and, following very productive discussions, prepared its final report. In the past, Demirel, Özal, İnönü, and Erbakan Hoca took certain steps toward resolving this issue, but due to the conditions of the time, the necessary opportunities did not emerge.”
Commenting on the commission’s report, Kurtulmuş stated, “None of the concerns held by certain segments of society are valid. The parties’ own views were added to the report. The swift implementation of the recommendations in the report is a process that Turkey must complete.”
“The Imralı statement is important”
Addressing Abdullah Öcalan’s statement on the anniversary of the February 27 call, Kurtulmuş said, “The statement made from Imralı is important. One of the common points in the report is the dissolution of the organization and the laying down of arms, along with the necessary legal arrangements. From now on, the dissolution of all elements of the organization and the laying down of arms will be ensured. Then Turkey will take the necessary steps and will not pay a price for this process. The process is entirely under the control of politics.”
Kurtulmuş also stated that developments in Syria have contributed positively to the progress of the process.
