Cypriot politician and Member of the European Parliament Lukas Fourlas spoke about the attacks on Rojava and recent developments in the region. Fourlas emphasized that safeguarding the region’s democratic gains, ensuring the implementation of international law, and preventing the influence of violent groups are of vital importance.
Speaking about the attacks on Rojava and Europe’s stance, Fourlas said that as a Cypriot politician, he cannot ignore any military intervention or violation of sovereignty. He stressed the need to respect international law, protect civilians, and prioritize a political solution under the auspices of the United Nations. Fourlas added that Europe’s silence provides indirect legitimacy to the attacks. He underlined that the goal should not be to further destabilize an already fragile region, but to ensure lasting stability.
Addressing violent and extremist groups operating in the region, Fourlas expressed deep concern over their growing strength. He warned that any indirect or direct support by international actors for jihadist and violent groups against Rojava could have serious consequences, reminding that Europe has paid a heavy price for terrorism in the past. Emphasizing that security and human rights cannot be subject to bargaining, Fourlas stated that the fight against ISIS and all terrorist organizations must continue and that international law must be upheld.
Fourlas also criticized Europe’s broader approach to Rojava and the region, noting that the experience of Cyprus clearly demonstrates the dangerous consequences of selective sensitivity. He said that European policies at times apply double standards and stressed the need for a principled and consistent approach.
Sharing his views on democratic models in Rojava and the region’s administration, Fourlas said he respects all ideas and initiatives that promote democracy and human rights. He emphasized that implementing a comprehensive political solution in Syria under the auspices of the United Nations is the only way for the democratic model in Rojava to gain institutional legitimacy.
Regarding mechanisms to support Rojava, Fourlas stated that sanctions are a tool, not an end in themselves. He emphasized that priority should be given to de-escalation, increasing humanitarian aid, and strengthening diplomatic initiatives, adding that the experience of Cyprus shows that stability can only be achieved through international legitimacy and political dialogue.
