The Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Numan Kurtulmuş, met with the co-chairs of the DEM Party, Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan. The meeting on Tuesday focused on the final report of the parliamentary commission established to address the Kurdish question, as well as the forthcoming legislative steps. The meeting took place at the DEM Party’s parliamentary group office. Following the talks, Kurtulmuş and Bakırhan made a joint press statement.
Reintegration of PKK members
Kurtulmuş thanked the DEM Party for its contribution to the commission’s work. He stated that a “historic threshold” had been crossed in addressing one of the most serious problems in the history of the Republic. The report, he noted, was adopted in parliament with broad consensus and now forms the basis for further deliberations in the General Assembly. For sustainable progress, mutual goodwill and constructive cooperation are essential, Kurtulmuş said, and emphasized that both the laying down of arms, the dissolution of the PKK, and the social reintegration of its members must be carefully prepared. Turkey, he said, will leave this issue behind once and for all.
DEM Party calls for concrete steps
Tuncer Bakırhan described the meeting as constructive. He stated that the report is significant, even though differences remain alongside shared positions. These differences, he noted, were openly acknowledged. “The key priority now is to expand on the points of consensus and translate them into concrete political steps. The resolution of the Kurdish question concerns not only the present, but the country’s future for decades to come,” the DEM Party co-chair said. Given the instability in the Middle East and the potential for regional escalation, he emphasized that internal reconciliation in Turkey is of particular importance.
Call for legislative regulations to be introduced without delay
Bakırhan called for legislative regulations to be introduced without delay. In addition, he stated that practical steps could be taken even before formal legal amendments are enacted. These include implementing rulings of the Constitutional Court and reinstating dismissed mayors to their positions. Referring to the month of Ramadan, Bakırhan stressed that necessary steps should not be postponed. “Concrete measures could help strengthen confidence in the process and reduce social tensions,” he said.
Both sides concluded by reaffirming their willingness to continue the dialogue and advance the parliamentary deliberations.
