Teachers and students in Qamishlo: We will fight the bans on our language

In the northern Syrian city of Qamishlo, a demonstration was held on the occasion of 21 February, International Mother Language Day. Teachers, students, and residents who participated in the demo demanded that Kurdish be recognized as an official language.

Teacher Azad Hisên, who joined the demonstration wearing traditional Kurdish attire, said: “On the occasion of 21 February, marches were organized in many cities. We celebrate this day for the families of the martyrs, Leader Apo (Abdullah Öcalan), students, and teachers. We want the Kurdish language to be recognized in the constitution. It is unacceptable that only two hours of Kurdish lessons are provided. We call on all international powers to recognize our language officially in the world and in Syria.”

Teacher Warvîn Xelef also emphasized their demand for Kurdish to be a language of education from primary school to university.

Stating that 21 February is a day of resistance, teacher Necla Mihemed said: “We want our children to learn their mother tongue. Our children have been receiving education in their mother tongue for years and have made significant progress. We demand that our name and our language be included in the constitution. As Kurds, we must join hands and protect our language.”

A student named Bekir Ebdo addressed the enemies of the Kurdish people, declaring: “You cannot destroy our language. We will protect our language until the last drop of our blood. Do not test us; we are Kurds and we are determined. You will never be able to eradicate our language, which we will protect to the very end in defiance of bans.”
