Nearly a year after Abdullah Öcalan’s “Call for Peace and a Democratic Society,” the isolation imposed on him continues the 27th anniversary of the February 15 International Conspiracy. Despite the passage of time, no lasting or concrete change has been made to the conditions on Imrali.
Necdet Atalay spoke to the ANF and said that any discussion of the process must begin with improving Abdullah Öcalan’s working and communication conditions.
Atalay said, “Yes, it is said that meetings are taking place. Delegations come and go. However, Mr. Öcalan cannot establish direct and free communication with politicians, academics, journalists, or with his own society. This is a serious problem.”
Atalay said that limited, de facto meetings do not amount to a legal guarantee, and that, unless a permanent arrangement is put in place, these steps cannot be seen as an expression of a genuine will toward a solution.
Hope right is the key threshold before parliament
Necdet Atalay said that trust must be built within society, particularly among the Kurdish people, and that this can only be achieved through legal arrangements. Atalay said, “A regulation must be introduced on the right to hope for Öcalan and other political prisoners. This is one of the most fundamental thresholds before parliament and the process being pursued.” He added that the limited, incremental changes made so far have failed to meet societal expectations.
Atalay said that the aim of the international conspiracy 27 years ago was to dismantle the Kurdish freedom movement and added: “Twenty-seven years ago, there was a calculation to suppress and disperse the Kurds. Today, however, the Kurds are more organized, stronger, and more visible in the world. A sense of national consciousness has developed. The conspiracy has not achieved its goal. Despite this, insisting on isolation is not a solution; it is the perpetuation of non-solution.”
Rojava is the conscience of humanity, its status must be secured
Necdet Atalay described the attacks against Rojava after January 6 and the siege imposed on Kobanê as “a second international conspiracy,” and said that Rojava, which has been fighting against the barbarism of ISIS that threatens humanity, is a matter of conscience not only for the Kurdish people but for all of humanity.
The siege on Kobanê must be lifted immediately
Atalay recalled that despite various meetings with the administration in Damascus, the embargo and siege imposed on Kobanê are still continuing and said that the status of Rojava must be secured through constitutional and legal guarantees. He said, “Without recognition of Rojava’s status, the threat will not be removed. There is a mindset that seeks to swallow the Kurds. But the Kurds are no longer the Kurds of the past; they will not be swallowed, they will resist.”
Atalay said that the Kurdish people preserve their dignity and will continue their resistance even if they do not prevail, and he also called on the democratic public: “The siege on Kobanê must be lifted as soon as possible. This is not only the responsibility of the Kurds, but of all democratic circles with a conscience.”
