Shengal tribes: We must learn from the genocide and ensure our unity

Mirza Bekir, head of the Shengal tribes, said that internal unity among the Yazidis is of vital importance.

Drawing attention to threats against the region and the need for solidarity, Bekir said: “We must learn from the 2014 genocide and not allow this disaster to happen again.”

Bekir noted that today there are tens of thousands of armed Yazidi forces and that these forces have played a decisive role in bringing the Yazidi community to this point. He said: “We must protect these forces. The time has come for everyone to set aside their political views and stand up for Yazidi identity.”

As head of the region’s tribes, Bekir stated that they are making intense efforts to achieve unity among the Yazidi in the near future. He said that the stance of all tribal leaders in recent meetings has been positive and concluded: “In order to thwart all plans against Shengal, our military forces must unite under a single umbrella without delay and ensure the security of our lands.”
