As part of the campaign, in which around 3,500 signatures were collected, 150 signatures, primarily from political parties with representative weight, were submitted to the United Nations. The letter called for political status to be granted to Rojava, for the blockade imposed on Kobanê to be lifted, and for the protection of women’s gains in Syria.
The letter was delivered to senior bodies and officials of the United Nations, foremost among them Secretary-General António Guterres. These included the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, the Geneva office of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), and the United Nations Syria desk.
In its statement, the women’s union stressed that the letter was not merely a civil society initiative but had also been prepared with the support of Kurdish political parties and numerous institutions.
The letter stated that in the ongoing political solution processes in Syria, the national and political rights of the Kurdish people must be guaranteed constitutionally. It stressed that for a lasting settlement, the political status of Rojava must be recognized at the international level.
The letter also demanded the immediate lifting of the blockade imposed on Kobanê and its surroundings. It said that civilians must be protected, humanitarian corridors must be opened, and that the United Nations must take urgent action within the framework of international humanitarian law.
In addition, the letter called for preventing attempts to alter the demographic structure in Kurdish regions and for the protection of human rights.
The Kurdish National Women’s Union said that guaranteeing the political, cultural, and national rights of the Kurdish people under constitutional protection is a fundamental condition for lasting peace.
