During an “anti-ISIS” tour of the Middle East, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot responded to the Le Point cover story on the abandonment of the Kurds and France’s position regarding the situation in Syria.
The rights and identity of the Kurds must be recognized
Barrot stated: “After decades of bloody repression under the regime of Bashar al-Assad, what is envisioned is a reunited Syria that respects the rights of all minorities in Syrian society, particularly and foremost recognizing the rights and identity of the Syrian Kurds.”
The ISIS threat persists
When asked about reports of ISIS members escaping and the threat they pose, Barrot responded:“This is precisely why I traveled to Syria and Iraq as part of an anti-ISIS mission: because the risk still exists. At a time when the region is going through upheaval and Syria is experiencing a transition process, our responsibility to protect France and the French people is to leave absolutely no room for ISIS to re-emerge.”
Barrot added: “In this fight, which we are determined to continue while mobilizing our military capabilities, the Kurds must remain key allies.”
« Dans notre combat contre Daech, les Kurdes doivent rester des alliés de premier plan. »
Pour Le Point, @jnbarrot revient sur sa mission au Moyen-Orient et l’urgence de sécuriser la région face au risque terroriste.
