UN delegation visits Kobanê and sssesses humanitarian situation

A delegation from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) visited the city of Kobanê to assess the humanitarian and health situation under the conditions of the blockade that has been ongoing for approximately four weeks. The delegation met on Monday at the headquarters of the Autonomous Administration with the local Executive Council as well as representatives of key service authorities. The focus was on identifying ways to stabilize the provision of essential goods and services to the population.

The talks particularly addressed coordination across the sectors of economy, agriculture, energy, water, childcare, education, and bakery supply. The objective is to maintain basic services despite the current restrictions and to bridge acute shortages.

Both sides emphasized the need to intensify joint efforts and to initiate short-term, implementable measures aimed at improving living conditions. Particular attention was given to the situation of displaced persons accommodated in temporary shelters within the city.

At the conclusion of the visit, the UN representatives, together with officials of the Autonomous Administration, conducted an on-site inspection of reception centers to gain a direct understanding of the living conditions. The blockade of Kobanê has been maintained since 20 January by militias affiliated with the Syrian transitional government. Despite a corresponding agreement with Damascus, no easing of the situation is currently in sight.
