The Kobanê Health Council (Desteya Tenduristiyê ya Kobanê) announced that due to the ongoing siege and the spread of diseases, the medicines in their possession are about to run out.
The Council noted that so far 2,000 people have been admitted to the hospital with complaints of poisoning, but there are not enough medicines available for treatment.
In a press statement in front of Kobanê Hospital on Friday, the Co-Chair of the Euphrates Canton Health Council, Ehmed Mehmûd, said the following:
“Today is 13 February. The city of Kobanê has been under siege by the transitional government for 25 days. Essential supplies necessary for daily life are not reaching the city. Medicines required for various illnesses are not being allowed into Kobanê. We thank our people in Bakurê (Northern) Kurdistanê. At the same time, AMC, MDM, and the Red Cross have provided limited medical assistance, but this support is not sufficient for the city.
There are a large number of displaced people in Kobanê, and the city is currently facing a major epidemic. The existing medicines do not meet the needs and are rapidly running out. There are patients with specialized conditions such as cancer who need to be referred to other hospitals. Medications for liver inflammation have completely run out. Surgical medicines have significantly decreased. We are facing serious difficulties due to the shortage of diabetes, heart, and blood pressure medications.
Due to water cuts and the consumption of well water, 2,000 people have so far been admitted to the hospital with poisoning complaints. These cases are more prevalent among displaced people. Because of the siege, medicines are not allowed into the city. We demand the immediate lifting of the siege and that all medicines be allowed to enter the city. We had some technical equipment for disease testing, but they have also broken down. Due to electricity cuts, the devices were damaged. Therefore, the siege imposed on Kobanê must be lifted urgently.”
