Since January 6, military forces affiliated with the interim Syrian government, along with ISIS and gangs backed by the Turkish state, have continued their attacks on Rojava. While many areas, especially Kobanê, are being kept under blockade, the embargo on food, electricity, and other basic humanitarian needs continues.
In response to the attacks and the worsening humanitarian situation, ecology activists from various countries are expressing their support for the solidarity call issued by the Mesopotamian Ecology Movement and TEV-EKO.
We rise up for Rojava
Alexander Panez, a member of Causeos – Critical Research Collective operating in Chile, sent a message of solidarity to the people of Rojava.
Panez said, “I send all my solidarity to the people of Rojava and the revolutionary movement. For many groups in Latin America, this process is extremely inspiring.” Stating that they are sending a strong message of solidarity against the attacks by the Syrian government and other geopolitical powers on the revolution in Rojava, Panez said, “We rise up for Rojava, we stand with it, and we send our solidarity from Chile.”
Basque activists: “We won’t remain silent”
During an event held in the Basque Country with the participation of 30 social movements and civil society organizations, the Guggenheim Urdaibai Stop movement read a message of solidarity with Rojava.
The message said that they stand in solidarity with the Mesopotamian Ecology Movement and the European Ecology Movement for Kurdistan, and that Rojava is facing attacks from the new Syrian regime supported by the Turkish government.
The statement emphasized that the attacks have led to a serious humanitarian crisis, stressing that hundreds of thousands of people are under threat in terms of access to water, food, shelter, and healthcare. Reacting to the silence of the international community, the message said, “In 1937, much of the world silently watched the bombing of Gernika. Today, we will not remain silent.”
The statement, which included an open call to political leaders, concluded with a demand for a full and lasting ceasefire so that the Kurdish people can live in peace. The slogan “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî – Woman, Life, Freedom” was also raised, along with the declaration, “We stand with the Kurds.”
Long live the Rojava resistance
Letícia Oliveira, an activist from the Movimento dos Atingidos por Barragens (Movement of People Affected by Dams), also stated that they stand in solidarity with Rojava.
Oliveira recalled that the people of Rojava are under attack by the Syrian government and said, “We stand in solidarity with the people struggling in the Rojava region. We are with them in the struggle for life, popular sovereignty, and peace throughout the world.”
She concluded her message with the words, “Long live the resistance of Rojava.”
International statements of support in response to the call by the Mesopotamian Ecology Movement and TEV-EKO are expected to continue in the coming days.
