Marking the 27th anniversary of the international conspiracy carried out against Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan on 15 February 1999, the Centre for Kurdish Affairs will organize a panel discussion at the House of Lords of the UK Parliament.
The event, scheduled for the evening of 12 February, is titled “Kurds in a Changing Middle East: Power Balances, Risks and Opportunities” and will bring together politicians, trade unionists, and academics.
Hosted by Labour MP Bambos Charalambous, the event will feature as speakers İmralı Delegation member and DEM Party MP Cengiz Çiçek, House of Lords member Lord Maurice Glasman, journalist, author and campaigner Rahila Gupta, Professor of International Relations Vassilis Fouskas, and PYD (Democratic Union Party) Foreign Relations Spokesperson Salih Muslim.
The conference will focus on the political, social, and human rights dimensions of the Kurdish question, particularly peace processes, democratic participation, and the role of civil society.
Discussions are also expected to address Turkish foreign policy, regional interventionism and the Cyprus issue, social solidarity and peacebuilding, as well as Rojava and peace in the Middle East.
Highlighting the significance of the event, Seyid Pirsus, an activist from the Centre for Kurdish Affairs, said that 15 February represents one of the major turning points in the history of the Kurdish people.
Pirsus stated that the panel discussion would bring together representatives of the Kurdish movement, academics, parliamentarians, and civil society to discuss both the profound rupture caused by the conspiracy and the democratic resistance and possible solutions that have emerged in response.
