İmralı Delegation meets with Erdoğan

After three and a half months, the fifth meeting between the İmralı Delegation of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), represented by Mithat Sancar and Pervin Buldan, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has taken place at the Presidential Palace. The meeting on Wednesday focused on the ongoing dialogue process concerning the democratization of Turkey and the resolution of the Kurdish question.

Earlier, Erdoğan referred to the work of the commission addressing the Kurdish question during his party’s parliamentary group meeting: “Our commission is close to completing its report. After the report is published, politics will assume greater duties and responsibilities. As the AK Party, we will also act in a more constructive and inclusive manner. We will not hesitate to make every effort to ensure that this issue is permanently resolved.”

İmralı Delegation: We have important agenda items

In a statement before the meeting with Erdoğan, Pervin Buldan and Mithat Sancar emphasized the significance of the meeting. “The process has now reached a certain stage. At a time when the parliamentary commission has begun drafting its report, there are high expectations within the public regarding how the process will proceed. We have important agenda items for today’s meeting with the President. After the meeting, we will issue a written statement,” Buldan said.

Since the beginning of the current process, meetings have taken place between the İmralı Delegation and Erdoğan. The last one took place nearly three and a half months ago. Referring to this, Sancar stated: “Since our last meeting, there have been important developments both here and in Syria. In addition, the parliamentary commission’s work has entered its final phase. We will discuss these issues with the President. We will exchange our respective views. We have proposals that we will present.”

Commission working on the final report

The drafting committee of the parliamentary “Commission for National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy” recently submitted its first draft of the final report to the parties. Sancar also commented on this matter: “No final word has yet been spoken on this issue. Drafts have been delivered to the parties, and they will evaluate them.

We want a draft that can achieve the broadest possible consensus, one that includes the widest segments of society and provides them with reassurance. The foundation for such a consensus exists. I hope all parties will assess this foundation properly. It is important that the process be carried out in line with its spirit and with elements that will reassure all sides in the future. We will do everything in our power to achieve such a consensus. We hope and expect the other parties to adopt the same attitude.”

Evaluations expected by the end of the month

Sancar concluded: “The parties will evaluate the joint draft report. Afterwards, the drafting committee will reconvene, likely by the end of this month. So far, no mutual evaluations have been shared. Everyone should make every effort to reach an agreement—and they should do so. We will address both the steps taken so far in the process and the remaining tasks ahead, as well as the key items on the agenda.”
