Kurdish and Iranian lawyers: Torture against detained protesters is increasing

Forty-eight Kurdish and Iranian lawyers issued a statement drawing attention to the Iranian state’s brutal treatment against detainees and said: “During the protests, thousands of innocent citizens were killed. Prisons are severely overcrowded. Diseases are spreading, and detainees are not receiving medical treatment. Violence is being used against detainees.”

“These events have plunged the Iranian people into deep anxiety. Under these conditions, the rule of law and the protection of the rights of all citizens—especially detainees—are of the utmost importance,” the statement underlined.

The statement further emphasized that fundamental rights must be safeguarded in accordance with international human rights conventions, criminal law, and laws related to the protection of freedoms. It said that the law must not be violated for political reasons.

The lawyers drew attention to the treatment and trial of protesters under detention, stating: “Detained individuals are not granted the right to meet with their lawyers. Decisions concerning detainees are made within minutes, without their lawyers being present. This has become a routine practice of the authorities.”

The statement also highlighted the conditions of detainees, noting the following: “Prisons are severely overcrowded. Diseases are spreading, and detainees are not provided with medical treatment. Violence is inflicted on detainees. Confessions are extracted under torture, and the detainees are placed in solitary confinement.”
