Labour Party Members of Parliament, who have been exerting diplomatic pressure on the government for days over the attacks on Rojava, described the agreement reached between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Interim Damascus Government as one of “cautious optimism.”
Feryal Clark Demirci, the Labour Party’s Kurdish woman MP, welcomed the agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Syrian Government as a starting point toward de-escalation and stability in North and East Syria.
Clark said that any ceasefire which reduces violence and creates space for dialogue is a positive step. She said, “This is particularly important for civilians who have endured years of conflict, displacement, and insecurity. However, this agreement must now be backed by good faith, transparency, and action. The rights, security, and dignity of the Kurdish people and other minorities must be genuinely protected and not diluted or postponed. Commitments regarding civil, educational, and political rights, as well as the safe return of displaced people, must be fulfilled not only on paper but in practice.”
Clark said she would closely monitor the process and added: “I will continue to press the United Kingdom Government and international partners to ensure that this process delivers real accountability, respect for international law, and lasting protection for vulnerable communities on the ground.”
Whittome: We are deeply concerned
Labour Party MP Nadia Whittome also welcomed the agreement and issued the following call to the government: “Reports that civilians are facing severe shortages of food, water, electricity, heating, medical supplies, and communications during attacks by Syrian government forces on the Kurdish-led SDF in northeastern Syria deeply concern me.”
