Democratic Union Party (PYD) Presidential Council member Aldar Xelîl shared his assessment on developments in Rojava and Syria on Ronahî TV. Referring to the meeting and agreement held in Damascus between SDF General Commander Mazloum Abdi and the co-chair of the Autonomous Administration’s Department of Foreign Relations Ilham Ahmed with al-Sharaa, Aldar Xelîl said: “Since January 6, a new concept has been put into effect. Right now, a policy of annihilation is being implemented against our people. Many states supported these policies. The concept was based on destruction, and many states were involved in it. We, in turn, sought ways to save our people from these annihilation policies. Our people resisted, and continue to resist, with extraordinary effort to protect their achievements. Kurds all over the world rose up. The factor of Turkey is a decisive one in this process. Turkey saw that the process it initiated was in danger. This played a role in the decisions taken today as a result of the resistance here. When all of this came together, a new phase began.”
Aldar Xelîl said that the agreement “is not an end,” and added: “This is part of the struggle. We need to strengthen the resistance through democratic and peaceful methods. It is not correct to say that an agreement was reached and everything is over. Syria is not yet a democratic country. Elections have not been held, there is no parliament. A major attack was carried out against our people, and we are struggling to determine what we can do to protect them from these attacks. An agreement means that both sides make certain mutual concessions. Not everything turned out the way we wanted, nor the way they wanted.”
Drawing attention to the fact that the new administration in Damascus has undermined trust by failing to comply with many agreements up to now, Xelîl said: “Many agreements were made, but they did not fulfill their obligations. Just because an agreement was reached does not mean we will say everything is over. Moreover, the process could evolve in other directions as well. With this agreement, the way is being opened for Kurdish parties to engage in politics throughout Syria. The walls built between us and other Syrian cities must be torn down. We will achieve this through struggle. There are Kurds living in many cities of Syria. Once the necessary steps are taken, we will struggle everywhere in Syria. Over more than a year, the Syrian state has not taken a single step toward democratization; we must force it to take steps through struggle.”
Emphasizing that the current developments are the result of the resistance of the peoples, Aldar Xelîl concluded: “If any step is being taken, it is because of our strength. No state helped us in taking these steps. We must rely on ourselves. We can advance this process through national unity. A spirit of unity has been achieved in this process. From now on, everyone must rely on their own strength. The struggle continues, and the revolution continues.”
