Due to the siege on Kobanê and the arrival of families displaced from different regions, the management of Mishtenur Hospital warns that if the situation continues in this way, the hospital will become unable to provide services within the next three days.
Regarding the latest situation at the hospital, Dr. Evîn Xelîl, a member of the Mishtenur Hospital Management, said: “Mishtenur Hospital provides services from 08:00 in the morning until 17:00 in the evening. The hospital has pediatric, women’s health, psychology, and general outpatient clinics. In addition, there are diabetes and wound care units, as well as laboratory and X-ray departments. Previously, around 150–170 patients came daily. Following the recent wave of displacement, this number has nearly tripled, placing us under serious strain. Currently, around 450 people go to the hospital every day. However, our supply of medicines is steadily decreasing.”
If this situation continues, the hospital will completely shut down within three days, said Evîn and continued: “We are currently in the winter; the cold is increasing day by day, and as a result, illnesses are also on the rise. As more patients come here and their numbers increase, diseases are spreading even further. Children and pregnant women are especially at risk. Children and women need to stay indoors and keep themselves warm using heating sources. However, due to the siege, there is neither diesel fuel nor any other means available.”
Evîn noted that thousands of displaced residents are struggling to survive outdoors and added:“Thousands of displaced citizens are trying to survive in schools and on the streets of displacement camps in this cold. Despite these conditions, Kobanê remains under siege. We therefore call on the relevant parties to act immediately and, in the face of this siege, to open a safe corridor to ensure that essential necessities for life—especially medicines—reach us.”
