Tension and concern continue in and around the camp where families of ISIS members are held.
Withdrawal from Hol Camp
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which have protected humanity from ISIS brutality for years, announced on January 20 that their forces were compelled to withdraw from al-Hol camp due to the international community’s indifference towards the ISIS issue and its failure to assume its responsibilities in addressing this serious matter. The SDF units were redeployed to areas surrounding cities in northern Syria that are facing increasing dangers and threats.
Withdrawal from Al-Shaddadi Prison in Hesekê
On January 19, the SDF said that al-Shaddadi Prison in southern Hesekê, which holds thousands of detainees from the terrorist organization ISIS, had been subjected to repeated attacks carried out by factions affiliated with Damascus. Although the prison is located approximately two kilometers from the International Coalition base in the area, the base did not intervene, despite repeated calls for intervention. SDF announced that Al-Shaddadi Prison had fallen outside the control of their forces as a result of these developments.
On the same day, the SDF shared footage showing militias affiliated with the Syrian Interim Government and supported by the Turkish state releasing ISIS members from the Shaddadi Prison.
Withdrawal from Al-Aqtan Prison in Raqqa
On January 23, forces of the SDF, YPJ, YPG, and anti-terror units, which have been guarding the Al-Aqtan Prison in Raqqa, retreated to Kobanê after days of siege and heavy shelling, during which the so-called Syrian transitional government cut off water, electricity, and food supplies.
For days, fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the People’s and Women’s Defense Units (YPG and YPJ), and the Anti-Terror Units risked their lives to defend Al-Aqtan Prison in Raqqa against attacks by jihadist HTS government forces and Turkish combat drones.
Al-Aqtan prison is considered one of the most heavily secured facilities for high-ranking ISIS members in northern and eastern Syria. Since Sunday, it had been under heavy fire from regime militias, and a Turkish drone strike was also documented. For days, the fighters prevented the approximately 2,000 imprisoned ISIS terrorists from escaping. According to consistent media reports, the SDF had been waiting for a commitment from the international ISIS coalition to take over security of the prison, which is now under the control of regime troops.
