The left-wing political movement Unbowed France (La France Insoumise, LFI) group in the National Assembly released a statement denouncing the Syrian government militias’ brutal aggression on the Kurdish neighborhoods of Aleppo.
The attacks ongoing since the evening of January 6 have already claimed 10 civilian lives and left at least 63 others injured, while dozens were forcibly displaced, and civilian infrastructure was destroyed by bombing and gunfire.
LFI noted that this offensive follows the blocking of roads and the cutting off of electricity and heating in Kurdish neighborhoods, which has prevented schools from reopening since the beginning of the year: “We strongly condemn these attacks against civilians, which are in flagrant violation of international law.”
LFI solemnly called on Emmanuel Macron to “ensure that France uses all its influence to bring about an immediate ceasefire and protect the Kurds in Syria, who have been our country’s staunch allies in the fight against ISIS since 2019.”
The LFI statement underlined that: “The social contract of Syrian Rojava, based in particular on the increased participation of women in all spheres of society and on the coexistence of Kurdish, Arab, and Syriac communities, is a unique model that represents an opportunity in the process of reconstruction and stabilization underway in Syria.
Foreign interference, and particularly the involvement in the conflict of Erdogan’s government, which continues to persecute the Kurdish minority also present in Turkey, must cease.”
The movement called for the immediate lifting of the siege of Kurdish neighborhoods and the urgent resumption of the long-standing peace dialogue between Kurdish forces and the new government so that a political solution can be found for a democratic and decentralized Syria based on justice, equality, and coexistence.
“France must take a firm stance in favor of peace and the recognition of the fundamental rights of the Kurdish people and promote, within European and international institutions, political support for dialogue, reconciliation, and peacebuilding,” the statement said.
