As Syrian transitional government-affiliated groups escalate their attacks against the Kurdish neighborhoods in Aleppo, the Turkish Ministry of Defense stated, “Our country supports Syria’s fight against terrorist organizations based on the principles of unity and territorial integrity. Turkey will provide the necessary support if requested by Syria.”
Damascus’ attack came after similar threats and statements from the Turkish government that provoked civil war.
The Kurdish-dominated neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsood and Ashrafiyah in Aleppo, home to hundreds of thousands of civilians, have been indiscriminately bombed since January 6. The attacks are being carried out primarily by mercenary groups trained and equipped by the Turkish state and included on international sanctions lists. The same mercenaries had also participated in massacres committed against Alawite areas and Druze communities in Syria.
