Iranian director Panahi: Recent protests are an “uprising to move history forward”

Iranian director Jafar Panahi said that the protests that have shaken Iran in recent days are an “uprising” carried out to “move history forward.”

The Iranian filmmaker, who won the Palme d’Or at the most recent Cannes Film Festival, shared a post on his Instagram account stating: “Our shared pain has turned into a cry in the streets. For four days now, the people have been standing not to complain, but to demand change.”

The message came after three days of protests against the high cost of living, which were initially launched by shopkeepers in the capital Tehran and joined by students on Tuesday.

The Iranian director added: “This uprising is a determined will to persevere, to move forward, and to advance history.”
