Rights violations in Elazığ No. 2 Prison

Mustafa Geylani, who was handed over to Turkey by Georgia in 1999 and sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment, said during a phone call with his family that cell and room searches were carried out on the 11th, 16th, and 19th, and that these searches reached the level of harassment and ill-treatment.

Relaying his brother’s account, Fahir Geylani said that during the searches, especially those on the 11th and 19th, rooms were completely ransacked and belongings were damaged.

Geylani stated that the prison administration is taking a stance against the current political process, saying: “It is now clear that the administration there is acting against the ongoing process and that they oppose the Peace and Democratic Society Process. Despite all the positive steps taken, the prison administration’s approach amounts to abuse and torture.”

No safety for prisoners

Noting that similar practices have occurred in the past, Fahir Geylani said they requested that the camera footage of these searches be examined and submitted to Parliament.

He reported that prisoners were being transferred to different rooms against their will, and that personal belongings, photographs, and writings were being confiscated—calling these actions a form of “psychological torture.”

Stating that the family will continue to follow the case, Fahir Geylani announced that they will file a criminal complaint against the prison administration.

Geylani added: “Experiencing such things during this process worries us. While we expect them to regain their freedom as a result of legal regulations, such approaches are unacceptable.”
