Prisoner in Mahabad dies after medical neglect

Abdolhadi Sheikhehpour, a prisoner from Sardasht, has died in Mahabad Prison after being denied medical care, despite having completed his prison sentence days earlier, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has reported.

“On Sunday, 14 December 2025, the prisoner died in Mahabad Prison after being denied medical care and access to treatment, despite having been unable to move from his bed for two days due to illness,” an informed source told KHRN.

According to the source, “During those two days, despite his critical physical condition, he was not transferred to the prison infirmary and prison officials paid no attention to his situation. Although he had completed his three-year sentence a few days before his death, his release was delayed for unknown reasons.”

Sheikhehpour had completed his three-year sentence several days before his death. However, for reasons that remain unclear, his release had been delayed.

The deceased prisoner, a father of two, had been arrested around three years ago on drug-related charges and sentenced to three years in prison.

Prison officials have informed Sheikhehpour’s family that he had “died of cardiac arrest.”

Due to prison overcrowding and the lack of medical facilities in prison infirmaries, ill prisoners are held in extremely harsh conditions. Transfers to medical centres outside prisons are often obstructed or delayed, leading to the deaths of dozens of prisoners in recent years as a result of being denied access to medical care.
