The Welsh Parliament (Senedd) has announced its support for the process underway between the Kurdish freedom movement and the Turkish state, stating that it represents a “historic opportunity” for peace.
During discussions in Parliament, Plaid Cymru MPs Rhys ab Owen and Heledd Fychan brought up the ongoing process between the Turkish state and the Kurds.
As a result of the discussions, the Parliament adopted a motion expressing its views on the peace process and issuing a call for action. The motion, which was also published on the Parliament’s official website, includes the following:
This Senedd:
1. Notes the historic opportunity of the emerging peace process in Turkey, where the Kurdish movement engages in dialogue with the Turkish state.
2. Welcomes steps toward peace, including ceasefire, disarmament, dissolution of armed structures, and withdrawal under parliamentary oversight.
3. Expresses concern over continued detention of political prisoners and urges compliance with international human rights obligations.
4. Calls on the Welsh Government to support, with the UK and international community, efforts for a negotiated settlement respecting democracy, human rights, and rule of law.
5. Affirms support for Kurdish and Turkish communities in Wales and the UK in promoting peaceful resolution.
