Fines imposed on civilians trying to leave Girê Spî

Living conditions in Girê Spî have deteriorated day by day since the occupation of the city by the Turkish army and affiliated militia groups in 2019.

Due to the worsening living conditions in the city, unemployment, difficulties in accessing basic necessities, and lack of security, many are trying to go to Turkey to work in order to make a living.

Local sources report that residents who are apprehended while crossing into Turkey are handed over directly to militias at border crossings, and get released only after paying 5,000 Turkish liras per person. Reports say that those unable to pay the amount are detained or subjected to mistreatment.
