TEV-DEM: The fall of the regime does not mean an end to injustice and denial; the struggle continues

On the first anniversary of the fall of the Ba’ath regime, the Democratic Society Movement (TEV-DEM) issued a statement, saying: “After more than 14 years of massacres, tragedies, and futile wars imposed on the Syrian people in service of international and regional projects, December 8, 2024, the day the head of the Syrian regime fled, marked the end of an era in which the Ba’ath Party monopolized power.”

The statement described this day as a national day in which the entire Syrian people participated, hoping to build a democratic, pluralistic, and participatory Syria.

It added: “What became clear over time was something entirely different from the people’s aspirations, as regional and international agendas emerged, shaping Syria’s future.”

The statement noted that “the Damascus government that emerged from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham has failed to fulfill its promises to the people, instead working to entrench Turkish and Qatari influence and empower the Muslim Brotherhood and racist nationalists, which led to massacres against the Alawite and Druze communities and the targeting of Christians.”

TEV-DEM stressed that “the positions of the Democratic Autonomous Administration and the Syrian Democratic Forces were principled in adhering to the March 10, 2025 agreement, avoiding dragging Syria into a civil war.”

The movement warned that “the mindset of Islamist, Brotherhood, jihadist, and chauvinist nationalism, now allied in Damascus, seeks to distort and reinterpret the agreement to serve agendas aimed at resurrecting dictatorship with an Islamic and sectarian veneer.”

TEV-DEM affirmed that “the fall of that regime does not mean an end to injustice and denial; the struggle by us, the Autonomous Administration, the Syrian Democratic Forces, and all democratic forces to achieve the Syrian people’s true goals of freedom and dignity continues.”

The movement called on all Syrians “to stand against all forms of sectarian and nationalist incitement, to reinforce civil peace, and to support the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East of Syria, as they are the guarantors of building a free and democratic Syria.”

The statement concluded: “We congratulate the Syrian people on the fall of the chauvinistic Ba’ath dictatorship, and at the same time we reject all attempts to revive the dictatorship. We will work with all patriots to build a decentralized, pluralistic, and democratic Syria.”
