A delegation of female mayors from Northern Kurdistan arrived in Sulaymaniyah on Monday. The group was welcomed by Governor Haval Abubakir (Heval Ebubekir) together with the city’s mayor, Leyla Omer.
The delegation from North Kurdistan consists of Ayten Kaya, co-mayor of Suruç district of Urfa; Sevim Biçici, co-mayor of Silvan district of Amed (tr: Diyarbakır); Safiye Akdağ co-mayor of Yenişehir district of Amed, and Gülbin Şahin, co-mayor of Nusaybin district of Mardin.
Discussions on culture and municipal cooperation
According to a statement from the governor’s office, the meeting focused on topics such as cultural exchange and ecological and municipal cooperation between cities in South and North Kurdistan. The aim, it said, was to deepen inter-municipal dialogue and develop common perspectives. Governor Abubakir assured the mayors of his support and spoke out in favor of strengthening relations between the municipalities.

Visit to the PUK
During their visit to Sulaymaniyah, the delegation also met with politician Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed, who is a member of the Political Academy of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
According to PUK Media, during the meeting at the Zamwa Museum, discussions centred on the peace process and efforts to resolve the Kurdish issue. First Lady Shanaz expressed her hope that the existing peace would endure and continue to strengthen in the period ahead.
The delegation toured several parts of the Zamwa Museum, where they viewed the extensive literary and political legacy of the late Ibrahim Ahmed.
