Kurtulmuş says the process has entered its ‘riskiest’ phase

Speaking to Milliyet Newspaper, the Speaker of Parliament Numan Kurtulmuş commented on the Peace and Democratic Society Process, the work of the commission established within the scope of the process, and the commission’s recent meeting with Abdullah Öcalan.

Kurtulmuş said, “The MPs who visited Imralı will share their observations and notes with the commission. The important thing is to share the main points of what was discussed there with the commission. The observations of the MPs indicate that an exceptionally positive and constructive meeting took place, reflecting an approach that is more advanced, more constructive, and more desirous of peace and the resolution of this issue than what has been portrayed as ‘Imrali’s ideas.’”

Numan Kurtulmuş stated that the commission’s work would conclude after the preparation of a report on legal regulations.

“We sincerely hope that all parties can come together on a joint proposal. A consensus can be reached based on the texts submitted by the parties for the commission report. We will complete the process quickly, without falling into a situation where we are relaxed until the day of the exam and then rushed afterward. The commission has brought the most serious issue in the history of the Republic to this day without conflict, noise, or problems. This means that Turkish democracy now has the maturity to negotiate even the most difficult issues. This should be reflected in the constitution and other legal texts. I believe it will have a positive impact,” the Speaker of Parliament said.

Kurtulmuş added, “Things have gone well so far, but the next phase is the riskiest. No one should act in a way that prioritizes the interests of their party or group. It must be determined that all elements of the organization have laid down their arms and abandoned their organizational activities. It must also be seen that they will integrate with the new administration in Syria.”
