The Women’s Commission of the Human Rights Association (İHD) Amed (tr: Diyarbakır) Branch announced its Report on Violence Against Women covering the period from November 1, 2024, to November 1, 2025.
Commission member Esra Saçaklıdır stated that violence against women is not limited to physical attacks; psychological, economic, sexual, and social pressures also isolate women and drive them to suicide.
According to the report, at least five women committed suicide due to economic and psychosocial pressure.
On the other hand, 46 women died under suspicious circumstances within a year and no effective investigation was conducted into these deaths.
Additionally, 29 women lost their lives and 9 women were injured due to domestic violence in the Kurdish region. Esra Saçaklıdır stated that because domestic violence is often seen as a “family matter,” cases become invisible and women become even more isolated.
Despite 2025 having been declared the “year of the family” by the government, there has been no decrease in femicides, said Saçaklıdır, adding that the state’s family-focused policies have left women more vulnerable.
The report noted that LGBTI+ individuals are increasingly exposed to violence due to rising hate speech and discrimination, with some cases resulting in murder.
The İHD Commission voiced the following demands to prevent violence against women:
– Turkey should rejoin the Istanbul Convention,
– Law No. 6284 should be effectively implemented,
– Rapid and effective investigations should be launched into cases of violence, impunity should be ended,
– Women’s access to support mechanisms should be facilitated,
– Pressure on women’s organizations should end,
– Policies that will strengthen women’s economic independence should be implemented.
The Commission called on all state institutions to fulfill their responsibilities in combating violence against women.
