The spokesperson of the State of Law Coalition, Aqil Fetlawi, answered questions by the Iraqi media about the process of selecting candidates for Iraq’s premiership.
Aqil Fetlawi said: “We have our own candidate for the prime minister’s post, and we do not accept al-Sudani being appointed for the new term. The previous prime ministerial selection was rushed. The last selection process required a quick decision due to public pressure and political disagreements.”
Emphasizing that the State of Law Coalition supports the announcement of the Coordination Framework as the largest parliamentary bloc, but does not support al-Sudani for a second term, Aqil Fetlawi stated that they would meet with the committee and present their candidate to the Coordination Framework.
Aqil Fetlawi continued: “Government control over parliament, special privileges given to MPs, and the facilitation of their approvals hinder parliamentary work. Because of the government’s control over parliament, the parliament no longer has a meaningful role; throughout its term it has only carried out investigative procedures.”
For Iraq’s 6th parliamentary elections, special voting took place on 9 November and general voting on 11 November. The Coordination Framework began its work to choose the new Iraqi prime minister on the night of 17 November. The Coordination Framework emphasized the need for broad national coordination and adherence to constitutional timelines in order to advance the post-election process.
