IHD: At least 6,094 violations of the right to life were recorded in Turkey in 2024

The Human Rights Association (IHD) Documentation Center has published its report on “Violations of the Right to Life in 2024.” Accordingly, at least 6,094 people lost their lives in Turkey throughout 2024, while 434 people were injured.

The report highlighted serious human rights violations under numerous headings, including conflict zones, workplace fatalities, gender-based violence, discriminatory attacks, and state negligence.

According to the report, 3,262 people, including 10 civilians, lost their lives in military operations and armed conflicts.

“It was determined that 38 of those who lost their lives were soldiers, 1 was a village guard, and 1,530 were armed militants. It was established that 39 of the armed militants lost their lives within Turkey’s borders, while 1,491 lost their lives within the borders of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (IKRG). It was determined that 1,579 people lost their lives during military operations conducted by Turkey in northern Syria. At least 50 people were injured in clashes and operations, including 23 soldiers, 14 civilians, and 13 police officers.”

On the other hand, nine people lost their lives due to violations in the use of weapons by police, gendarmerie, and private security guards.

A total of 18 people were injured in attacks by village guards.

At least 11 refugees died in the Aegean Sea.

Three refugees died on the Iranian border.

Transgender refugee M.E., who was deported from Hatay Cilvegözü, died.

Three people died while in custody.

At least 27 people lost their lives in prisons or during the treatment process after release.

In 2024, 16 attacks with unknown perpetrators were identified; at least four people were killed and nine were injured.

Seven political party offices and two newspaper offices were also targeted in attacks.

As a result of the state’s failure and negligence, 128 people, including 12 children, lost their lives. At least 7 people were killed by official vehicles hitting them.

At least 14 people were killed in 106 hate attacks reported in the press. At least 38 of these attacks targeted Kurds. In addition, 103 children lost their lives due to violations of their right to life.

378 women were murdered and 1,897 workers died in 2024.

71 children (22 of whom were under 14) and 94 migrant workers died in workplace accidents. At least 64 people lost their lives while working as motorcycle couriers.

During peaceful protests, 2,651 people, including 27 minors and 46 journalists, were detained and subjected to torture and ill-treatment.

613 people were detained on Newroz on March 21, and 268 people were detained across Turkey on May 1.

During Pride Month events, 23 people were taken into custody.
