Rojin Durmaz’s release postponed for another six months

Diyarbakır Women’s Closed Prison delayed Rojin Durmaz’s conditional release for another six months, citing problems of behavior.

The Administrative and Observation Board considered Rojin Durmaz’s request to be transferred to the Imrali F-Type Prison as an “indicator of a tendency within an organization” and included it among the reasons for postponing her release.

Rojin Durmaz was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2019 by the 2nd Heavy Penal Court of Mardin for the allegation of “membership of an illegal organization.”

The Board argued that Durmaz “did not distance herself from the crime, did not show remorse and was not ready to reintegrate with society”, and therefore decided that her release was not appropriate. Accordingly, the next release evaluation will be held in April 2026.

Beritan Güneş Altın, a member of Parliament for Mardin from the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), brought the decision to the Parliamentary agenda and requested an explanation from Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç.

Altın also applied to the Human Rights Inquiry Commission, stating that the decision was taken on ideological grounds and that the presumption of innocence was violated.
