Arrest warrant issued for politician Hüda Kaya

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of former HDP Member of Parliament and politician Hüda Kaya, who had been sentenced to 1.5 years in prison. The decision, approved by the appellate court, was announced by her lawyer, Zilan Leventoğlu, who said, “This decision is an act of political revenge. We do not accept it!”

Zilan Leventoğlu announced the ruling on her X account, stating that it is a continuation of politically motivated pressure against her client.

In her statement titled “The re-imprisonment of Hüda Kaya is political revenge. We do not accept it!”, Leventoğlu explained that Kaya was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison following a case related to an incident that occurred when she visited her son, Cihad Ebrari, at Çanakkale Prison in 2022. Ebrari had been unjustly arrested and later acquitted of all charges.

Leventoğlu wrote: “Our client, Hüda Kaya, visited her son in prison in her capacity as a member of parliament. During this visit, she faced unusual obstructions. Afterward, a case was filed against her on the claim that she had a mobile phone in her bag. Despite all concrete evidence proving otherwise, she was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison in a decision that defies both logic and law.”

This is a political sentence

Leventoğlu emphasized that the ruling was politically motivated: “By citing a conviction from nearly 30 years ago, during the February 28 process, a sentence that has long been nullified, the court avoided deferring the sentence or suspending the announcement of the verdict, instead ordering its immediate execution. This is a deliberate, arbitrary, political, and unjust act.”

She also stated that a notice was served requiring Hüda Kaya to surrender to prison within 10 days, but legal appeals have been filed. The defense team will request that the sentence be served under house arrest instead of imprisonment.

Leventoğlu concluded: “We bring to public attention the ongoing political pressure, vengeful attitude, and unlawful practices carried out against Hüda Kaya through the judiciary. We will continue to follow this case closely.”

Meanwhile, Hüda Kaya herself reacted to the decision on her X account, writing: “Apparently, I’m supposed to surrender within ten days!”
