DEM Party discusses peace process and legislative plans

The Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) convened its executive committee at its headquarters in Ankara on Tuesday to discuss current political developments. Under the leadership of co-chairs Tuncer Bakırhan and Tülay Hatimoğulları, several topics were brought onto the agenda, ranging from the continuation of the peace process to expected legislative initiatives in parliament.

A central topic was the status of the “process for peace and a democratic society” initiated by Abdullah Öcalan. The party leadership discussed both the steps taken so far and existing obstacles, as well as possible contributions of its own to the further course of events. The ongoing campaign “We demand peace because …”, which was launched on the occasion of International Day of Peace on September 1, was also evaluated. The activities planned until the end of the month are to be reviewed and adjusted if necessary.

Visit to Öcalan under discussion

Another item on the agenda was a possible visit by the party leadership to Kurdish leaader Abdullah Öcalan on the prison island of Imrali. The DEM Party co-chairs and members of the Imrali delegation want to decide on a specific date for the visit.

Looking ahead to the upcoming parliamentary session

With a view to the reopening of the Turkish parliament planned for October 1, discussions were also held on legislative proposals that could be introduced after the hearings in the “Commission for National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy” have been concluded. The DEM Party demands that Abdullah Öcalan also be consulted on further steps.

Measures against ecocide in Kurdistan were also on the agenda of the meeting.
