DEM Party calls for swift action on legal regulations for the resolution process

DEM Party Group Deputy Chair Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit held a press conference held in Parliament assessing the current topics on the agenda. She emphasized the need for concrete steps to be taken in resolving the Kurdish question, calling for the commission to meet with Abdullah Öcalan and address the legal regulations required for the process.

Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit stated that today’s meeting of the parliamentary commission should evaluate the Kurdish question not only in its political dimension but also in its economic, social, cultural, and societal aspects.

She stated that conflict resolution and global experiences would be discussed at the 10th meeting, adding, “The resolution of problems progresses through negotiation, dialogue, and the struggle for democratic peace.”

Koçyiğit emphasized the importance of seriousness in the resolution process, stating: “Declarations of good will are important, as is the path taken, but concrete, practical steps must be taken to broaden and expand this path, and to ensure that this path reaches its destination.”

Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit pointed out that the commission should continue its hearings while simultaneously beginning to discuss critical legal regulations, citing the example of the Group for Peace and Democratic Society, which laid down its arms on July 11 but was unable to return to the country because Parliament has not made a law.”

“We need to quickly discuss a legal arrangement that will enable those who have laid down their arms to return to the country and that will remove all legal liabilities to date. We need to discuss its framework quickly, and take practical steps to this end,” she underlined.

Pointing to the role of Abdullah Öcalan for the process to proceed safely, Koçyiğit said, “Mr. Öcalan, who initiated this process, must be heard by the commission as the main actor. There is a need for concreteness, a decision, and clarity on this matter. This is not a topic that can be further delayed, postponed, or followed by a string of ‘buts’ and ‘howevers’.”

Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit listed the DEM Party’s two priority demands as follows:

– The commission should form a subcommittee to visit Imrali and meet with Abdullah Öcalan.

– Discussions should begin on the framework for the legal regulations needed for the process before October 1.
