Jody Williams, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and anti-war activist, sent a message of support for Öcalan’s call on 27 February and for the Peace and Democratic Society Process. In a message to the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), Jody Williams said: “Like many others, I fully support the renewed efforts to build peace between Kurds and Turks. Decades of conflict can only be ended through open and honest dialogue, with a sincere will for lasting peace and democracy.”
Recalling the open letter signed by 88 Nobel laureates in support of Öcalan’s call, Jody Williams said: “We expressed our appreciation for the significance of this call and the courageous step of initiating a process for the PKK to dissolve and for weapons to be laid down in order for peace to take root. But change does not come from desire alone. Both the government in Turkey and the relevant international institutions must take the necessary steps in this process.”
