Amnesty International calls for action for Sharifeh Mohammadi facing the death penalty in Iran

The Austrian branch of Amnesty International issued a statement as part of the “Freedom Campaign” for political prisoner Sharifeh Mohammadi.

The statement noted that human rights defender Sharifeh Mohammadi was sentenced to death for peacefully advocating for women’s and workers’ rights and for the abolition of the death penalty in Iran. In August 2025, the Supreme Court upheld her sentence, and the death penalty could be carried out at any time, it warned.

Members of the Ministry of Intelligence arbitrarily arrested Sharifeh Mohammadi on December 5, 2023. In the days following her arrest, she was tortured and ill-treated. Her trial consisted of a 30-minute hearing that in no way met international standards for fair trials.

In June 2024, the Revolutionary Court sentenced Sharifeh to death for “armed rebellion against the state” (baghi). The verdict cites Sharifeh’s peaceful human rights activism as “evidence” against her.

Amnesty International pointed out that the Iranian authorities have been making even more frequent use of the death penalty to instill fear and terror in the population and consolidate their power since the protests under the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom” at the end of 2022.

Amnesty International called for participation in the petition and demanded Sharifeh’s release, stressing that, “Peaceful activism is not a crime. Sharifeh must not die!”
