Adham Barzani’s press office said that three of Barzani’s bodyguards and a friend were detained by KDP forces.
It was reported that the three, who were detained near Sheqlawa while returning from Sulaymaniyah (Silêmanî) to Soran, had their phones confiscated and were taken to the General Asayish in Erbil (Hewlêr).
The statement noted that the detention was linked to a previous warning by the KDP, which said: “Do not go to Sulaymaniyah, do not visit Adham Barzani.”
It was emphasized that the incident occurred at a time of growing economic difficulties and political tensions in the region, and the public was called upon to take a stand against unjust detentions.
Adham Barzani criticised the close ties between the KDP and Turkey, and he opposed the Turkish military presence in South Kurdistan. In 2024, he was eventually banned from entering Erbil by the Kurdistan Regional Government. In July 2024, the Erbil Security Directorate of the KDP government issued an arrest warrant for him.
