A strike planned by the Turkish Mine Workers’ Union (Maden-İş) for August 1 was covertly banned by a decree signed by AKP President Tayyip Erdoğan on the grounds that it was deemed “detrimental to national security.” The presidential decree was published in the Official Gazette.
No agreement was reached between the parties regarding wage negotiations affecting 600,000 public sector workers. In this context, Türk-İş was set to launch its first strike on Friday, August 1, at boron mines affiliated with Eti Maden.
