Since 13 July, the city of Suwayda (Sweida) has been under attack by the Syrian Interim Government forces and affiliated armed groups, leaving the population struggling to access basic goods like bread.
Ongoing assaults have claimed the lives of at least 1,448 people, while thousands of survivors are now fighting to obtain even the most essential food supplies.
But the scale of the crisis goes far beyond that. Armed groups affiliated with the Syrian Interim Government are blocking flour shipments from entering the city. As a result, bakeries have rapidly run out of their remaining reserves. According to available reports, the flour supply in local warehouses is on the verge of running out completely.
Semah Nadir, the manager of a major bakery in Suwayda, told ANHA News Agency: “Residents from many villages west of the city fled to Suwayda due to heavy shelling. In addition, as flour began to run out in bakeries in surrounding villages, the demand for bakeries in the city increased significantly.”
While trying to survive ongoing attacks, the people of Suwayda are also forced to wait in long queues to get some bread for hours each day. With each passing day, they are facing deeper hunger and growing uncertainty.
