Cemile Turhallı Balsak: Our sole purpose is to achieve unity!

The first session of the “Conference on the Importance of Kurdish National Unity,” organized by the Democratic Unity Initiative in Bazîd, Agirî, under the slogan “Toward Peace for the Sake of Unity,” was held. The session, titled “Lack of Alliances in Kurdish History and Its Consequences”, was moderated by İlhan Tan.

Author Îhsan Colemêrgî, speaking at the session, emphasized that the geography of Kurdistan has always been a place where dominant powers rode their horses and waged wars. He said: “The lack of alliances has always been one of the greatest problems for the Kurds and has led to their division into four parts. One of the Kurds’ greatest losses is the religious brotherhood with the dominant states. Religion is a powerful weapon. When the dominant and the colonized share the same religion, that religion turns into a sword on the neck of the colonized. I support the current process. Kurds must never bow to the powers. In the coming century, Kurds will definitely achieve success.”

Then, Cemile Turhallı Balsak, Co-Spokesperson of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Language, Culture, and Arts Commission, stated: “Let’s form our alliance from within. Alliance exists everywhere, in nature, in our environment, alliances are everywhere. If alliance exists everywhere, why don’t Kurds form one? Kurdistan is a homeland without borders. In Lausanne, we saw how hegemonic states divided Kurdistan into parts. Throughout history, the common dream of all Kurds has been unity, but it has never been realized. Our only goal must be to achieve our unity.”

İkbal Durre also emphasized that alliance is the most critical issue for Kurds, saying: “It is important to understand what an alliance really means. This issue is not unique to Kurds. Many peoples and states around the world struggle with alliances. Even between the PUK and KDP there are ongoing problems. Economic relations play a defining role in this. Historically, we have been divided into five parts. It is very difficult for these parts to take a unified stance. We are one, but that does not mean we must think the same. What we must do is solve all our problems together while preserving our differences. I believe this process can contribute positively to that. Even the Turkic Republics have not achieved such unity. Kurds have developed a strong awareness of the importance of unity. We must put aside divisions and move quickly to establish unity.

Kurds should support one another. Kurds must see their own reality. There are dominant powers that deepen this lack of alliance. In spite of them, we must do this. For example, holding the disarmament ceremony in Kurdistan and acting together may lead to certain outcomes. Although a process is underway today, Turkey has not been able to overcome its breaking points. Kurds are waiting, but the other party is unable to cross that critical threshold. Problems that have lasted 200 years cannot be solved overnight. This turbulent process brings great hope, but of course, it also involves risks. A path must be found for the status of Kurds. This status would also benefit the dominant states. No one has the luxury of ignoring the Kurds anymore. Kurds are now a subject in history and will take on an even more important role in the future. The order being established now in Rojava is a model for the world. Rojava serves as a laboratory for this. The West also needs to understand this well.”
