Meeting in Rome to discuss events in Syria

The Kurdistan Information Office in Italy (UIKI Onlus) and Rete Kurdistan invited everyone to attend a public meeting to be held at the Aula Majorana of the Physics Faculty of Rome’s La Sapienza University.

In a written statement, Rete Kurdistan and UIKI wrote: “The project of coexistence, direct democracy and self-determination born out of the Rojava Revolution is in danger following the escalation triggered by the joint offensive supported by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Free Syrian Army (FSA).”

The statement added: “Following the capture of Aleppo, the FSA launched an offensive that led to the occupation of Tall Refaat and Shehba, forcing approximately 200,000 civilians to flee their homes. Now the SNA is relentlessly attacking the city of Manbij. This attack is part of a context of escalating violence that threatens the existence and coexistence of the peoples in Syria, whose resistance is led by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the People’s and Women’s Protection Units (YPG/YPJ).”

The statement underlined that “Turkey is playing a decisive role in this offensive, as numerous international reports have confirmed, by directly supporting jihadist groups and militias responsible for human rights violations. The Rojava Revolution, which promotes direct democracy, gender equality and peaceful coexistence, is now at risk. The Kurdish resistance against ISIS has been a beacon of hope, but Rojava is facing a threat from an enemy that aims not only to destroy the Kurdish population, but also to destroy the values of freedom and justice it has built.”

The statement added that “the end of Bashar al-Assad’s decades-long regime could open a new chapter in the country’s history and mark the beginning of a dialogue to build an inclusive and democratic Syria. For this to happen, it is necessary to be vigilant and defend the gains of the Rojava Revolution and the right of its people to participate in the construction of a new Syria.”

The public meeting will be held on 12 December at 17:00 at the Aula Majorana of the Faculty of Physics at the Sapienza University of Rome.
