Ehmed: There is not enough support for the fight against ISIS

SDF General Command Member Newroz Ehmed stated that the Autonomous Administration’s limited resources and insufficient support prevented the struggle against ISIS from yielding full results, adding, “We need support in various ways, including material, moral, political, and military.”

SDF General Command Member Newroz Ehmed spoke to ANF on the anniversary of the Baghouz victory.

What happened after the victory in Baghouz, which marked the end of ISIS’s occupation?

Since 2019, many successful activities have been carried out. Operations in the surrounding areas were also carried out with the assistance of the International Coalition. These operations, however,  were insufficient. There was a place for ISIS to organize. In our neighbourhoods, there were bomb-laden cars and numerous simultaneous and coordinated attacks. The prison attack in Heseke exemplifies how they restructured and reenergized themselves. They are not done yet; they are still trying to attack. Previously, the International Coalition led by the United States, UK, and France had some activity, but it was insufficient. Our resistance continues regardless of anything. ISIS would be a real threat again if it weren’t for our actions and efforts. ISIS is still carrying out significant strikes in Iraq, and it is still active in areas controlled by the Syrian regime.

What kind of ground does Turkey’s state provide for ISIS to operate?

There are also places controlled by the Turkish government. ISIS organizes and trains their army there, as well as planning assaults against our regions. The executions of Abu Bakr Baghdadi and Abdullah Kardaş also demonstrated that all of ISIS’s leaders were stationed in these areas. They would not be able to stay there if they do not feel comfortable under some protection. This is important.

What are the challenges in the fight against ISIS besides the Turkish state?

The opportunities and limited support provided by the Autonomous Administration, which has been left alone, prevent the war against ISIS from yielding full results. There have been repeated requests for people remaining in the camps to return to their home countries, but only a small number of ISIS members have been taken away; the great majority remain. These are the most dangerous areas. There have been operations in Hol Camp in the past for this purpose. They portrayed it as a civilian camp. Statements like, ‘It’s a civilian camp, it’s unjust,’ have been made. This has been widely reported in the international press. Those who say this are essential supporters of ISIS and its ideology.

Is there any difference since the Hesekê attack?

The desired steps were not taken. Many subjects are mentioned, yet there is a sluggish attitude when it comes to implementation. As a result, the desired support is weak and insufficient in practice. What will the prison be used for if there are thousands of prisoners? What good will training a few people to do? Financial resources are insufficient. There are a lot of detainees and a lot of camps. Tens of people are involved.

What kind of support do you need?

ISIS foreign fighters should be taken by their countries. If they can’t take them back, they should at least help us. This place must be protected. So many detainees are under threat, so many ISIS families have their future at risk; so many children are destined to take place in a new terrorist army. They grow up without an education. They are a threat to the entire world. The entire world should share this feeling and fulfil their duty. Financial, moral, political, and military assistance are needed.

The press reports that activities in the region continue in the aftermath of the prison attack. Can you tell us about your struggle during this period?

Since the attacks, operations against secret cells have continued. In every way, operations against ISIS and its followers continue. Similarly, MIT has recently demonstrated its support for ISIS. They attack with the same mindset, methods, and goals. The Turkish state’s attacks did not end either. Both as a nation and as a military force we will continue to work hard to prevent these attacks. They will not be able to shatter our resolve and will.
