Doctor and soldiers torture prisoner in state hospital in Izmir

Latif Mollaahmetoğlu is held prisoner in İzmir No. 2 F Type Prison. He was subjected to a handcuffed examination at Yeşilyurt State Hospital on March 4. Mollaahmetoğlu was complaining of stomach pain.

Mollaahmetoğlu revealed that he was subjected to torture and ill-treatment in a phone call with his sister Dilan Mollaahmetoğlu on March 6, Sunday.

The prisoner stated that he objected to the doctors, saying that “the handcuffed examination is against the law, I have the right to be examined without handcuffs”, but that the doctors showed a “hostile” attitude.

According to Dilan Mollaahmetoğlu, after the doctor imposed a handcuffed examination in a hostile manner, he said to the soldiers, “Why did you bring him here, take him away”.

Dilan Mollaahmetoğlu said that the soldiers tried to force the prisoner out of the hospital with the cooperation of the doctor, and her brother told them, “I came here to be examined. I want to be examined, my stomach aches a lot,”.

TORTURE IN HOSPITAL

Dilan Mollaahmetoğlu said that the prisoner who was forcibly taken out of the hospital room was threatened by the soldiers by saying “if he chants slogans, we will kill him”. She said: “Four soldiers attacked my brother and tortured him. They take my brother to the fire escape and beat him there. Four soldiers and a handcuffed prisoner. They lay him on the ground. One kicks him on the head with his boot, the other kicks him in the neck. They are stepping on my brother’s hands, who are handcuffed. My brother said that he still has scars on his arms.”

The woman continued: “The soldiers were dragging my brother and spitting in his face with curses and insults. They kicked and slapped him, saying, ‘This is a state hospital’, and they bring him downstairs to a place where there is no one. Four more soldiers came, they continued to kick my brother in the head, neck, chin and nose. He was seriously injured. He is currently unable to use his neck.”

Mollaahmetoğlu told his sister that he “was tortured” and that he will report it. His sister said: “They took him to forensic medicine institute (ATK). The ATK prepared a biased report. He had no scan. They just said he suffered a contusion. No painkillers or drugs were given to him. He was sent back to prison and his friends saw his condition. They wanted to take him to the infirmary. However, the officers in the prison said that this had nothing to do with them. My brother is lucky because they could have killed him there.”

Mollaahmetoğlu expressed her concerns by saying that her brother was not examined and that they did not know if there were any fractures or dislocations.

Mollaahmetoğlu said: “This is the second time we are experiencing such a terrible thing. Five years ago, he was hit in the head with an iron stool. Torture happened before. We report these incidents to the Human Rights Association (İHD). We also applied to the Human Rights Equality Institution of Turkey (TİHEK). I sent an e-mail to the Ministry of Justice, the Prisons and Detention Houses, I wrote to the deputies, and I sent an e-mail to the commissions in the Parliament. We will raise our voices no matter what. A few weeks ago, the prosecutor’s office launched an investigation against me because I was interested in prisons. As his family, we will file a criminal complaint against the soldiers who were involved in this torture, the prison administration who legitimizes it, the doctor who imposed the handcuffed treatment and caused the torture. I have a request from citizens. Petitions can be written, e-mails can be sent, the reasons for torture can be asked.”
